How to create beautiful and sustainable furniture with reclaimed wood

Reclaimed timber can bring distinctive colour, wear and character to furniture. Reusing suitable material may also keep it in use for longer, but its suitability depends on its condition, history and the proposed piece.

Understand the source

Ask where the timber came from and whether its previous use is known. Reclaimed boards can contain old coatings, fixings or damage that are not obvious from a photograph. A reputable specialist can help establish whether the material is suitable for furniture.

Allow for preparation

Timber needs to be assessed for moisture, movement, soundness and hidden metal before machining. Cleaning, sorting and preparation can take time, and the usable quantity may be smaller than the amount purchased.

Plan around the available boards

Board sizes, colour and previous wear can shape the design. Agree which marks to retain and which defects would affect strength or everyday use. A consistent finish should not be assumed across timber from different sources.

Ask before specifying reclaimed timber

Reclaimed material is not automatically suitable for every commission or a guarantee of lower environmental impact. We assess material options as part of the brief; availability and acceptance of a particular reclaimed timber must be confirmed before it is specified.

For a new piece, share your idea and any timber details. Our finishes guide also introduces options for hardwood furniture.
