Our Staffordshire Furniture Workshop
A small workshop. Serious craft.
Kingsley Woodwork is a small furniture workshop in Rugeley, Staffordshire, where bespoke furniture in oak, walnut and ash is made by hand for homes across Staffordshire and the wider UK.
See bespoke commissionsKingsley Woodwork started the way most things worth doing start — not as a business plan, but as a habit. Making things from wood. Getting better at it. Taking on more ambitious pieces. Realising that people valued furniture made with care, proper materials and attention to detail.
It still runs that way. Every enquiry comes to us directly. Every piece is made in the workshop, one at a time. There is no mass production, no volume target and no compromise on materials. That means better proportions, better joinery and furniture built around the room it is going into.
Making things
properly has
always mattered.
The first pieces were for our own home — shelves made to the size we needed, shoe storage to fit a small hallway, a desk that actually suited the room it was going into. Not because furniture did not exist to buy, but because so much of what was available was either overpriced for what it was, or too compromised to be worth bringing home.
Solid hardwood, properly jointed and properly finished, lasts for decades. It improves with age, can be repaired, and develops character that mass-produced furniture rarely does. Much of today’s fast furniture is made from engineered board with a surface that eventually wears away. Solid timber behaves differently, looks better and lasts longer.
Kingsley Woodwork exists because that difference is worth making, and because there are still people looking for furniture made that way.

The workshop — timber selection, grain matching and joinery
Where the
work
happens.
The workshop is in Rugeley, Staffordshire. It is set up for individual, high-quality pieces rather than volume production. The machinery is chosen for precision, and hand tools are used where machines are not the best answer. Timber acclimatises here before it is worked. Joints are dry-fitted before glue-up. Finishing is carried out carefully so the result is consistent and built to last.
Worked by hand
Each board is selected with intention. Grain direction, figure and colour consistency all affect the finished result, so timber choice is considered before the cutting and joinery begin.
Traditional methods
Mortise and tenon, dovetail, finger joint and housing joint all have their place. The joinery method is chosen for the needs of the piece, not for speed. Modern systems such as Domino and Clamex are also used where they improve strength, accuracy and long-term stability.
Done properly
Most pieces are finished with hardwax oil, applied by hand to protect the timber while keeping its natural character. It can be maintained, refreshed and repaired over time. Spray-painted finishes are also available where needed, using a trusted local finishing workshop.
The timber
is the
point.
Solid hardwood behaves differently from engineered alternatives. It moves with temperature and humidity, has natural variation from board to board, and needs to be worked with care. Understanding how timber behaves is part of making bespoke furniture properly — from timber selection and grain direction through to finishing and long-term stability.
The species below are the ones we work with most often at Kingsley Woodwork. If you have something specific in mind, get in touch. You can also see our finishes to understand how different timbers are completed.
Why the workshop matters
A bespoke piece is only as good as the care behind it. Good timber selection, accurate joinery, dry fitting, controlled finishing and one-to-one oversight all affect how furniture looks, feels and lasts. This workshop is set up to make fewer pieces, properly — and that directly shapes the quality of the finished result. If you are planning bespoke commissions, this is the part of the process that makes the difference.
"The furniture we make is meant to be used, repaired, and handed on. That's not a marketing position. It's what solid hardwood furniture, made properly, actually does."
Against disposability
Most furniture sold today is designed to be replaced. The materials don't age well, they can't be repaired, and they're not worth repairing if they could be. Solid hardwood is the opposite — it gets better with use, develops character, and can be refinished or repaired if something goes wrong. Buying once and buying well is better for everyone, including the environment.
Honest about what we are
Kingsley Woodwork is a small operation. There's no team of craftspeople, no production line, no outsourced component assembly. The two of us make the furniture. That's a limitation in terms of volume, and it's an advantage in terms of quality and attention. We are not trying to scale quickly — we are trying to make furniture well.
Made to fit your life
Standard sizes exist because they suit manufacturers, not because they suit rooms. Bespoke means the piece is designed around your space, your requirements, and your taste — not adapted from something that was designed for someone else. That sounds obvious, but it's the thing most furniture can't offer.
Doing it
responsibly
matters.
Sustainability in furniture is often used loosely. The most sustainable piece is usually the one that does not need replacing. Furniture made from solid hardwood, built properly and cared for over time can stay useful for decades.
Alongside that, Kingsley Woodwork makes practical choices to reduce impact: timber sourced from certified, well-managed forests, recyclable or biodegradable packaging, and a workshop powered by solar panels, battery storage and a heat pump.
