The Environmental Benefits of Choosing Custom Wood Furniture
A well-planned piece of furniture can stay useful for many years. Choosing a bespoke piece gives you the chance to consider its materials, repairability and intended life before it is made. Bespoke manufacture alone does not guarantee a lower environmental impact.
Choose materials with care
Ask about timber species, source and suitability for the design. If certification matters to your brief, ask what evidence is available for the particular timber rather than assuming that all hardwood is certified or locally grown.
Design for continued use
Dimensions, storage and access matter. Furniture that fits the room and its purpose is easier to keep using. Discuss finishes and construction with the maker so you understand the maintenance it may need.
Consider repair and maintenance
Regular care and repair can help extend a piece's useful life. The appropriate treatment depends on the finish: follow the guidance supplied with your furniture rather than applying a general polish or wax.
Discuss the whole journey
Material processing, transport, finishes and delivery all affect environmental impact. A local maker can explain their process, but the workshop's location alone is not proof of a particular carbon saving.
